IN MEMORY OF THE DEAD HOW DECORATION DAY WILL BE OBSERVED IN NEW YORK

President Arthur To Take Part---The Procession and Public Exercises-- Decoration of Monuments---Ceremonies at the Cemeteries

In addition to the memorial observances tomorrow, there seems to be a disposition on the part of all classes of people to make Decoration Day this year an occasion of complete relaxation from the ordinary business pursuits. The suspension of business down town will be quite general. The day being a legal holiday, the banks, Exchange, and public offices will be closed, and it is understood that the employes of all mercantile houses will be given a holiday. The programme for the public observances of Decoration Day in this City is an elaborate and interesting one, embracing memorial services on Union square in the morning, and imposing parade, the usual decoration of soldiers' graves in the different cemeteries and evening exercises at the Academy of Music. The expected participation of President Arthur, Gov. Cornell, and other distinguished persons in the various features of the day has thoroughly aroused public interest, and the demand for "good places" to see the procession and for seats in the Academy of Music is very great. Windows in Broadway and other streets, through which the procession is to pass, are being advertised to let, and in many instances the most extravagant prices are demanded and readily paid. In view of the fact that Decoration Day is a public holiday, numerous special entertainments, games, excursions, and regattas have been organized in and about the City. . . .

It goes on to detail the scheduled festivities, including the parade route and a list of some of the participating regiments and groups, sporting and boating events, and other entertainments, as well as some information on Brooklyn events scheduled.
