Brian McNeill's Family History Page

NOTE: This page has now been split between the 'McNeill / Gartland' and 'Cufflin / Gray' families and although it is still active all updates are being made to the two new sites.

Introduction

I have been researching the family history with my cousin Dorothy (Cufflin) Hubbard since 1988, having started with our common ancestors family the Cufflins. They have been traced in a direct line back to 1742 at Anstey in Leicestershire and from the adjacent village of Ratby back to 1565 at Blaby and Whetstone.
The earliest we have linked to are Raph and Margaret, who were born in the mid 1500's and who left a great deal of information about themselves in their respective Will's.
It is widely thought that Cufflin is the English spelling of the Irish surname Coughlan and it requires very little imagination to see how this might have come about.
My maternal grandmother's family the Grays have been traced to Bingham in Nottinghamshire at around 1796.
On my Fathers side the McNeills, I have got back to 1803 in Co. Antrim Ireland and my paternal grandmothers family the Gartlands, to about 1840, they having arrived here from Co. Tyrone, Ireland around 1870.
